Our Adult Education Program includes special programming and classes for all members of our congregational family. Throughout the year, courses in Hebrew, Bible, current events, Jewish theology, history and so much more will be offered at a variety of times and places.

Torah Study

Shabbat Morning Torah Study with Rabbi Jerome P. David, DD, Rabbi Larry Sernovitz, and Cantor Neil Schnitzer.
Join our friendly group discussing the week’s Torah portion.  We will be taking a slightly different approach to Torah this year -- For each book of Torah, a different Torah commentary will be chosen and each parsha, Torah portion, will be explored through its lens.  Through the year, we will be introduced to five key commentaries of our tradition.  The congregation’s rabbis and cantor will be taking turns leading each week of this year-long exploration. Novices and more advanced Torah learners encouraged to participate.  Look forward to lively debate and meaningful discussion.  No need to pre-register.

Adult B’nai Mitzvah and Hebrew Classes
Adult B’nai Mitzvah
Every year many Jewish adults consider - is this the year that I study to become a bar/bat mitzvah? Each person asks this question for different reasons and the answers are different, as well. For some people it is simply the studying that interests them. They may have already taken this journey, but they want to experience this as an adult with a different perspective. For others, this may be the first opportunity to take this journey. Maybe a bar or bat mitzvah was not an available option for them during their youth.  Whatever your reasons, Temple Emanuel offers a wonderful Adult B'nai Mitzvah program

Students need to have basic Hebrew reading skills to join this class, which will culminate in an Adult B’nai Mitzvah ceremony.   Register with Heidi Stern or by phone at 856-489-0035.

If you do not have Hebrew reading skills, consider talking our Tuesday noon-1 pm course.  This introductory Hebrew course is intended as the first year of a two year B’nai Mitzvah process.

Improve your Prayerbook skills
A course for students with some ability to read Hebrew and, now, want to improve their reading fluency and increase their knowledge of prayer vocabulary.  We will learn through games and hands-on practice.  Come prepared to learn but also to have fun.  This course is scheduled after the Adult B’nai Mitzvah class for those Adult B’nai Mitzvah students who want to further practice their Hebrew, but students who are not planning on becoming Adult B’nai Mitzvah are also encouraged to attend. Textbook fee.

Introduction to Judaism with Rabbi Jerome P. David, DD
To register, call the Union for Reform Judaism, 215-563-8183. (Some fees are involved .) Do Jews believe in life after death?  What is the Jewish view of Jesus? Why can’t you mix meat and milk?  Why is Shabbat so special?  The underlying principles and overriding beauty of Judaism are at the heart of this course.  This course is for those who want to learn the fundamentals of their religion and those who want to discover a new one and identify with the Jewish people.

“How-to Do” the Jewish Holidays with the Congregation’s Rabbis
Join us for three workshops on “How-to Do” Jewish rituals and holidays with your family and children. We will explore the meaning behind different traditions, learn how to do them at home and talk about ways to make them family friendly. A packet of useful background articles, recipes, blessings and projects will be distributed.  Attend one or all.

Yiddish on Thursday Nights

Why is there suddenly such a growing interest to learn a virtually dead language?  And why, after all these years, does a slowly dying language of the ghetto become so chic?   So where do you go to get a taste of the essence of this almost dead language that was spoken by many people not long ago?  Temple Emanuel, of course.  This class goes where no other Yiddish class has gone before. No boring drills. No memorization of words or conjugation of verbs.  Every attendee is an integral partner in learning.  The class learns conversational Yiddish quickly through Yiddish music recordings.  Prior experience is not necessary. Big Al Rubin, the class leader, spoke Yiddish as his first language. Join us for this genuinely fun evening.
